What is involved
Different surfaces, different treatment.
Most Wirral driveways are block paving, concrete or tarmac, and each behaves differently under a lance.

Block paving
Cleaning lifts the growth from the joints as well as the face of the block, which is why the sand usually needs replacing afterwards. We will tell you if yours does.

Concrete and imprinted
Concrete takes a firmer approach than most surfaces. Imprinted concrete has a sealed layer that we treat more carefully, since aggressive cleaning strips the seal.

Tarmac and stone
Tarmac is softer than it looks and can be scarred by too much pressure held in one place. Natural stone varies enormously, so we check it before choosing a method.

How a driveway clean actually runs.

Clear and check
Cars, bins and planters move off. We look at the joints, the edges and any loose blocks before a drop of water goes down.

Pre-treat
Weed and moss growth gets treated first where it needs it, so it lifts with the clean rather than fighting it.

Surface clean
A petrol pressure washer running a rotary surface cleaner attachment, which keeps the pass even and stops the striping you get from waving a lance about.

Detail the edges
The lance comes out for edges, steps and the awkward strip along the wall that a surface cleaner cannot reach.

Rinse and re-sand
Silt is rinsed off the blocks, then kiln-dried sand is brushed into the joints once the surface is dry enough to take it.

Tidy and walk round
Drains checked, silt cleared off the path, and a walk round with you before we load up.
Why re-sanding matters
The clean is half the job. The sand is the other half.
Block paving does not hold itself together. The sand in the joints is what locks each block against the ones around it, and cleaning washes a good deal of that sand out along with the moss.
Leave it out and the blocks start to move under a car, the edges creep, and weed seed drops straight into the empty joint. A drive that was cleaned and not re-sanded often looks worse a year later than one that was left alone.
So we brush kiln-dried sand back in once the surface is dry enough to take it. Dry is the operative word: sand goes into a damp joint as a crust rather than a fill, which is why we would rather come back the next day than rush it.

Will cleaning damage my block paving?
Not when the pressure and technique suit the block. The real risk with block paving is stripping the jointing sand rather than harming the block itself, which is why re-sanding follows a clean.
Do I need the joints re-sanded?
Almost always, on block paving. Cleaning lifts sand out of the joints along with the growth, and an empty joint lets the blocks shift and weed seed settle. We tell you at the start whether yours needs it.
Do you seal driveways afterwards?
Sealing is a separate job and it does not suit every surface or every condition. Tarmac we do not seal at all. Ask when you enquire and we will tell you whether it is worth it on yours.
How long does a driveway take?
A one or two car drive is usually a single visit. Bigger areas, or a drive with heavy growth, can run into a second day, and re-sanding sometimes waits until the surface has dried.
Can you get rid of oil stains?
Often we can lift them a long way, and sometimes not completely. Oil that has been sitting in porous concrete for years has soaked in rather than sat on top. We will tell you what we think is realistic before we start.
What about the white bloom on my blocks?
That is efflorescence, salts coming out of the block itself. It is not dirt and cleaning alone does not always clear it. It often fades on its own over time, and there is a treatment for it if it does not.
Do you need my water and electricity?
An outside tap is the usual arrangement. The pressure washer runs on petrol, so we do not need a socket. If there is no tap we can usually work around it, but tell us at the start.
Will the weeds come back?
Eventually, wherever there is seed and a joint to land in. Re-sanding the joints properly slows that down more than anything else, and a pre-treatment at the start of the job helps too.
